q: what made you want to play music in the first place?

a: my fourth-grade teacher inspired me. his name was mr. toothman. was an awesome man with an odd name.

mr. toothman used to take our whole class out into a sunny grass field in northern california and sing us john denver songs. he was really good at this and it lit up our spirits everytime. this experience planted the desire in me to someday be able to sing songs for people.

q: what inspires you the most? what do you find more important, words or music?

a: hmm. that depends. don't think eye can say that one is more important, just different.

been writing poetry for years, much longer than eye have been playing music, so eye have more of a history with words, but find that music has such an intense expressive power.

trying to do the best with both, combining strong poetry with strong music.

most of the song lyrics can stand alone as poems if read that way.

q: did anyone teach you music?

a: well no. never had any kind of lesson. have had a few people show me a thing or two, but have learned mostly on my own.

just always played around with various instruments and melodies since childhood.

q: do lyrics just come to you?

a: sometimes. other times eye have to work at them. depends.

have written songs in many different ways. sometimes eye fit music over lyrics already written, and other times come up with lyrics for some music that's already developed.

my favorite way, which eye did with world that you know, is to just create the whole piece completely in mind.

simply sat and consciously played around with different melodies and lyrics until that song emerged.

q: who do you think is the greatest musician (dead or alive)?

a: beethoven.

beethoven's music has made me cry so many times.

as far as recent musicians go, it's kind of a toss up.

would nominate any of the people on my mini music hall of fame.
